Meet Our Authors: RetroBox

Graphic Designer and Envato Elements Author, RetroBox, produces a range of eye-catching graphic templates and has attracted a following for his fun mockups and posters—making him one of the top-earning Authors on Elements.

In this interview, we catch up with RetroBox to learn about his creative process, his favorite graphic trends, and his tips for success in a competitive industry.

What’s your background and how did you get into graphic design?

I started working for free for an advertising agency 13 years ago. I really wanted to learn and practice design so it wasn’t a problem to work for free at that time, 6 months later I was hired and I started as a Junior Graphic Designer.

What do you love about your work as a graphic artist and why?

I love the flexibility that it gives you. It’s not a linear job, you can create almost anything that comes to your mind. A career in graphic design has given me an opportunity to meet great people with great talent.

You’re one of our top-earning Elements Authors. What would you say to someone just starting out on Elements?

Let’s go back to 2015 when I got an email from Envato with the title “Can we get your input on a new Envato product?”

When I saw the invitation of course I was excited but I never imagined the impact that Elements would have on my life. At that time I never imagined that I could be a top-earning Author on Elements. I started to upload my work without wanting it to be or trying to be at the top, I was just happy doing what I love and enjoying the ride.

Long story short— Make sure you do what you love, and enjoy creating what you like as opportunities come to all of us. I never thought that I would have that opportunity and yet here I am, writing this answer.

Mockups are in high demand on Elements right now—You create lots of cool mockups, what is your process from start to finish?

I think that you have to be on top of the trends when it comes to mockups, a great place to pay attention to that is Envato Elements and the articles that we get in the Forums. Personally, I like to blend photography and design so I draw the idea on paper and then I start to create that composition in the studio with the Elements that I think are right.

One of your most popular items (over the past month) has been your ‘Latest iPhone Mockup. What do you think makes this kind of item so popular?

We live in the digital era. I think that is why there is a high demand for digital products like UI kits, Mockups, Social Media Banners, etc. We are connected through technology so cell phones, computers, and tablets have become a very significant part of our lives. This is why it’s so important to upload digitally oriented assets.

What makes you most excited as a creator online?

The flexibility and the complete freedom. I get to do what I love and make a living out of it.

Are there any graphic design trends that you are loving at the moment?

Yes for me ”Photographic Branding” is a favorite. It’s a blend of design and photography and many brands are using it like PayPal, Ikea, Resorts, and more.

What main programs, tools, or techniques do you use to create your work?

I use my camera and programs like Photoshop, Lightroom, and Davinci Resolve.

What are your top tips for graphic designers just starting out?

Focus on what moves you,  find your style, and focus on that so you don’t fall into imitating other artists. Once you find your style and do what you love you will be happy creating and the reward comes by itself.
