Our latest interview features talented Power Elite author, videolancer based in Russia. Get to know their story, experiences and top learnings for authors in the world of video!

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living?

I live in St. Petersburg, Russia. It is a big beautiful city, which is great for the life of creative people, with professional events often taking place here. I used to be freelancing in the field of video graphics, but now my only income is concentrated on Envato.

To what do you attribute your success – how is your business unique?

I decided to pursue my business on the day when my income on Envato exceeded the income I received from freelancing. I would attribute my success to perfectionism and a bit of luck!

I have always been inspired by the community at the top of Envato. Now that I have become a top author, I hope my work can also inspire young authors to make worthwhile projects.

What do you love about your work and why?

I like working on Envato because I can rest whenever I want and for as long as I want. I like that tens of thousands of people (perhaps hundreds of thousands) use my projects. I like that I don’t need to look for work or vacancies – I do only what I want to do myself.

What’s the most challenging thing about your work?

Perhaps the most difficult thing for me is to realize my idea – technically. In theory everything always looks cool but when you try to repeat it in reality, sometimes you do not have enough knowledge, or there are not enough tools or effects in the software. After all, you should strive to make a project without any plug-ins and sometimes it takes a lot of time to find a working solution that allows you to do it without third-party applications.

What are some of the biggest lessons that has impacted your work?

At the initial stages of my career at Envato, I tried to do unique and specific projects. Over time, I realized that I was better suited for universal projects that can be useful for a larger audience, instead of unique projects for a niche audience.

What is your advice to other authors regarding how to create a successful portfolio?

  • Watch trends!
  • Be inspired by the work of other authors, but do not forget to add something to your own or combine. This tip is for those who create video templates.
  • Most users are not professionals, so it’s important to consider this. Do not complicate the project, adding a huge number of settings. You do not need to make a color controller for each element and part. Leave the user with only the most necessary set of settings, and for any small things – use automated procedural solutions.
  • To promote your profile, don’t engage in spam. For example, commenting on each item downloaded to help market the project, even without seeing it. This can irritate and repel many audiences.
  • Try attracting the audience from social networks more thoughtfully. You can make any free content that will include a link to your portfolio. For example, I create various free presets for video designers, which I distribute on my YouTube channel and through my website. Judging by the clicks, it works well!

Apart from yourself, who is your favorite marketplace author, and why do you like them?

Of course, those are the ones whose projects I’ve bought the most! These authors are: Pixflow and artbees.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I try to use my free time away from the computer. Basically it’s traveling, tourism, fishing!

What are your plans for the future?

So far I have no clear plans for the future – so stay tuned. However, I’m thinking about what what it’s going to be like when artificial intelligence shakes up the world!
